Mince Pie Quest Rules and 2018 Recap

Well, well, well, here we are again. It's that time of year where I head to the streets in search of worthy mince pies for your consumption. Before we open the 2019 Quest, let's have a recap, the rules and the results of the 2018 Quest.

What is Mince Pie Quest?

Basically, I try out as many pies as humanly possible during November and December and give you detailed feedback on them. They are scored out of 5 and rated on the following criteria:

Looks, Pastry, Filling and Overall.

Yes; that does mean I pick them apart and try each element separately. The Quest is all about the details and I take the rankings seriously.

For many years I have done this and shared the rankings with family and friends. In 2018 I finally shared The Quest on Instagram and people seemed to enjoy it, so here we are.

What are the rules?

If I can buy it, I'll try it. While I will try any pie (you'll see occasional special category posts), it must be a pie; no slices, cakes or tray bakes. If a pie is to be included, it must be ranked and posted on Instagram.

Previous winners must be given the chance to reclaim the title (where possible). Previous losers can be avoided or retried in an attempt to claw back some dignity (Quest Masters' generosity dependant).

While I won't always take price into consideration, I will list it where possible and it can affect the overall score if the pie is awful/amazing.

Why are you doing this?

I really love mince pies. And I like to think that I'm providing a service so that none shall be disappointed by a bad, avoidable pie. Let me find the best ones for you!

Mince Pie Quest 2018 Recap

It was a wild ride. I officially tried 17 mince pies (several more that were not shared in posts). So here's the breakdown of the winner, the losers and the surprise award.

4.5/5 - 2018 Champion - Waitrose Duchy Organic All Butter Mince Pies

The highest ranking by a whole point, displayed in all it's glory in the photo above. These were the first official entrants and the hands down winners. I'm hoping they release these again this year.

They beat out the 2017 Champion which scored a respectable 3.5/5.

1/5 - 2018 Losers - Caffè Nero and Local Cafe 1 tied.

Both expensive and terrible for different reasons. Let's hope nobody scores this low again; I don't think I can handle it.

Surprise award - I had 2 from the Jazzy and Non-Traditional Special Category that each scored 3.5/5: Waitrose and Partners Mini Mince Pie Selection and Morrisons The Best Blackforest Mince Pies. These were both unusual and delivered interesting, enjoyable flavours.

The rest scored between 1.5/5 and 3.5/5 - click through to my Instagram for details.

And with this post, I declare the official start of Mince Pie Quest 2019. Please come and join me over on Instagram - share your thoughts, recommendations and pie suggestions!
