Top 10 best beauty finds of 2019
I'm constantly trying out new products with varying degrees of success. Here's my ten favourites that I discovered this year and why I love them.
Beauty Kitchen - Abyssinian Oil Natural Cream Cleanser
A gentle but effective cream cleanser, removes makeup and leaves skin soft and hydrated. It smells great too, kind of like apricots but the fragrance doesn't linger. I've taken this everywhere I've travelled this year and tested it in different climates with no adverse reactions or breakouts. My favourite way to use this is after eye makeup removal, massaged all over the face and then removed with a warm reusable cotton pad or konjac sponge. The facial oil from the same line is lovely too.
Dr Jart+ - Ceramidin Gel Cream
I actually picked this up in TK Maxx after using various other Dr Jart+ skin care products and I'm now on my third jar! It's light but does an excellent job of moisturising and soothing and it layers wonderfully with other skin care and under makeup. Again, it smells really good and seems to work well through the seasons. It is a pricier cream but in my opinion is totally worth it.
Evy - Daily UV Face Mousse
I found this in a pharmacy in Sweden and was immediately intrigued. It has a light mousse texture that doesn't irritate or clog my skin in any way. It dries down to a slightly tacky texture which makes it perfect under makeup, even if you skip primer. I wear sunscreen every day and I'm on my second can of this - around 6 months of daily use for one can is great value for effective sun care to me.
Aromatica - Rosemary Scalp Scrub
Is it a little bit sad that I get excited to use this? It smells deliciously of strong peppermint essential oil which reminds me of my favourite Phillip B shampoo and those oils have a wonderful, cooling effect on the scalp. I use this a couple of times a month or whenever I feel like I have a lot of product build up or scalp irritation. The salt dissolves nicely and I've never noticed any residue afterwards.
Nuud - Deodorant
2019 was the year that I was determined to find an effective natural deodorant and I tried a whole bunch (stay tuned for reviews and recommendations). Two won me over, but Nuud makes this list due to effectiveness, portability and a biodegradable tube. It's a thick, odourless paste that somehow leaves no white marks on clothes.
Beauty Bakerie - Flour Setting Powder (Oat/translucent)
Firstly, this has got to have the absolute cutest packaging! I have tried a few products from Beauty Bakerie and have been pleased with almost all of them. This setting powder is light weight but long-wearing and doesn't oxidise or flash back. It plays well with every formula I've tried it over, from light concealer to full coverage foundation. Bonus - it comes in a variety of shades to suit all skin tones.
Sephora - Spicy Latte Collection eyeshadow palette
Another whim purchase in Sweden but an excellent one nonetheless. I grabbed this after forcing myself to travel on several trips with just a warm cheek palette (Nars Exposed) for face and eyes; I was desperate for some cool tones! This little guy is great value and a delight to use; the shades have great colour payoff and blend easily, you can create a bunch of different subtle and dramatic looks. Pretty sure this is a Sephora Europe exclusive.
Lancôme - Hypnôse mascara
Shout-out to the sales rep in the airport for this one. I was determined to try a different Lancôme mascara that I'd heard great things about. She pushed me towards this, so I picked up a mini out of curiosity. Turns out she was right; the other one was no good but this, I love! The formula allows you to add extra coats and it never clumps up, even hours after initial application. It doesn't flake or dry out in the tube either. There are plenty of more affordable mascaras that I love too, but this one is an easy recommendation.
Shadow sticks - various brands
These are all about convenience. I'm not somebody who is naturally effortless and I like to leave the house with a little makeup on. However, I also enjoy sleeping and making myself a decent coffee in the morning so these are the natural compromise. I have a few of these varying from basic nudes to sparkling orange (that is literally the shade name) and find that I can swipe and blend these for a natural or dramatic look in seconds. In the warmer months I do prefer to use an eye primer and will press a similar coloured powder shadow over the top to hold them in place. The ultimate lazy-girl time saver!
The Rose and Thistle Wax Patisserie - wax melts
Okay, this may not strictly be a beauty purchase but I just had to include it. Thanks to my extremely sensitive sense of smell, I am super fussy about all fragrances, especially home fragrance and candles. I tend to stick with my essential oil diffuser and my favourite blend (eucalyptus and peppermint with a drop of lemon or lavender). I found this store on Instagram and placed a small order including a wax melt in Sweet Bakery Heaven and it is honestly the most mouthwatering scent out there. Think buttery, golden syrup and fudge. It is crazy to me that I enjoy this sweet scent so much, but that giant, custom-ordered wax pie in the photo is proof!
